Fiji Filter of Hope Mission Highlights: Visiting the Other Side of Paradise

When you think of Fiji, you probably think about tropical paradise, island life, and ultimate relaxation.

The reality for many Fijians is marked by challenges such as poverty and limited access to basic necessities with just 58% of those that reside in rural areas having access to safe drinking water. Water is essential to life, but many people living in Fiji don’t have access to clean water.

Filter of Hope is a straight-forward solution to this big problem. The filter is a simple device that has tiny hollow-fibre membranes which filter out harmful bacteria. The filter can produce clean water for a family for up to 10 years!

A team of seven embarked on a GAiN mission to Fiji last month to distribute the water filters and share God’s love, partnering with Cru Fiji and a small church outside of Suva.

They began distributing water filters to families in rural areas who primarily relied on rainwater, often contaminated with sediment and bacteria. Others depended on the creek as their sole water source, using it for drinking, bathing, and washing clothes. The gratitude from the community was overwhelming, as the filters represented a tangible improvement in their daily lives.

Rain, hail, or shine… the team distributed Filters of Hope to 51 households during the nine day mission.

Here's a touching story shared by Vivian

“After the water filter was installed at Nita’s house, we asked if she wanted to take the first sip. Instead of trying it herself, she called for her youngest son, as she told us that water is his favourite thing!

So, the little boy came and sat on her lap, looking eager to try this cup of water. He took the first sip, and boy, do I wish you were there to see it…

This child had the BIGGEST smile on his face, as if it were the best thing ever!

And, you know what, it was… because I saw exactly where they got their water from, and it was a pipe sitting on muddy grass with excrement only a few feet away.

Even though he didn’t speak much English, you could see that he loved the taste of the clean, filtered water and finished the whole cup right in front of our eyes. We told him that he could have this fresh water every day now! He nodded and smiled with his bright eyes. His smile exuded true joy from within. It was heartwarming to know that this small device was going to change the trajectory of this family’s life. And, this was just one story!”

Thank you so much for your support!

We want to thank each volunteer who gave of their time and finances to join us in Fiji. We also want to appreciate each person who donated towards this mission to make it possible. Each donation of $80 helped to fund a Filter of Hope, giving clean water to an entire household for the next 10 years. Thank you! We hope you too can join us in Fiji in 2025.

Would you consider supporting the continuation of our Fiji Filter of Hope project?
