On the morning of Monday, 8 June, millions of Filipino children excitedly headed out for the first day of the new school year.

Instead of walking safely into their classrooms, they were met with terror. At 7:37AM, a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck just 13 kilometres southwest of General Santos City on the island of Mindanao.

Our hearts broke seeing the terrifying footage emerging from the ground, especially the videos of school children, dressed in their uniforms, visibly shaken and running in panic as the earth moved.

"It was the first time I experienced something that strong, that I really couldn't stop myself from tearing up. I thought about my children and my niece, what if something had happened to them?"

–Jojo Calma, 44, who was driving his motorised tricycle taxi in front of a building when it collapsed.

The Philippines is a country deeply loved by our staff, partners, and supporters. Our connection to this region is personal: we have run medical missions in General Santos City in the past, and our team was just in Davao City early this year. Having experienced the warmth, generosity, and resilience of the local people firsthand, seeing this vibrant region struck by such a catastrophe is absolutely heartbreaking.
