Our initial efforts focuses on the tragic magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Cebu on 30 September, which claimed at least 75 lives and left widespread devastation in the central region. However, before the communities could even begin to rebuild, they were slammed by powerful typhoons, turning a regional disaster into a nationwide emergency.

Typhoon Kalmaegi tore through the central islands, including areas already damaged by the earthquake on 4 November. This was followed immediately by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, a massive storm that made the crisis nationwide. Typhoon Kalmaegi alone tragically left over 224 people dead, many in the central provinces, and affected over 2.4 million people. The repeated storms have triggered deadly landslides, and left critical infrastructure, power, and water lifelines disrupted for millions.

“The place started to shake and items from the shop fell down… people were panicking, shouting!”

GAiN Australia and our local partners are already on the ground, rapidly expanding our focus from earthquake relief to an urgent multi-disaster response. The compounding effects of these crises mean families have lost everything and are now in critical need of food, clean water, immediate shelter, and essential medical supplies.
