On the night of 30 September, a catastrophic magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the central Philippines, centred near the coastal city of Bogo in Cebu province. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), at least 75 people have lost their lives, and over 1271 people are injured.

This disaster is close to our hearts. GAiN Australia has served in the Philippines for many years, including a medical and dental mission in Cebu in 2015. Our local partners are on the ground now, and they need resources immediately.

“The place started to shake and items from the shop fell down… people were panicking, shouting!”

Initial assessments on Wednesday, 1 October, showed widespread damage with at least 22 buildings damaged, and vital transport links were cut.

A major hurdle for aid is the damage to infrastructure: six roads and bridges in Cebu were affected, including one road and three bridges are now completely impassable, severely complicating relief efforts.

In Bogo, heartbroken survivors and rescue teams are facing enormous challenges. They are trying to transport essential heavy machinery to reach a cluster of shanties in a mountain village hit by landslides and boulders, but officials warn that “It’s hard to move in the area because there are hazards.”

We urgently ask for your support for families in need of food, water, shelter, and medical supplies. Please consider donating and praying for the families in the Philippines.

Will you help support those affected by the Cebu Earthquake?

Time is critical. Your swift action can provide the resources needed to reach survivors trapped in rubble and deliver essential aid to those left with nothing.
