Haiti has had to endure back-to-back natural disasters, leaving people displaced, without food, water or shelter. The 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck on the 14th of August, and Tropical storm Grace swept the area just two days after, adding to the hardships of those already displaced. More than 2,200 people have been reported dead, about 12,000 injured and entire villages completely destroyed. These disasters came at a time when the country was already experiencing political instability and an increase in gang violence.
GAiN WorldWide has been involved in sending teams and aid since the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Through our partner on the ground in Haiti we are already responding to the crisis. They have a task force and are planning to immediately support 600 families (roughly 3,000 people) by giving aid packages containing shelter material (tents), food, medicine and water. They also intend to help with the reconstruction of destroyed homes and church community buildings. They are planning to take children who have become orphans as a result of the earthquake into the children’s centre with the approval from the government.
